Mashpi Lodge

Mashpi is a luxury lodge in the cloudforest region of Ecuador, located 100 kilometres (60 miles) northwest of Quito and set within a private reserve. Positioned on a plateau in the heart of a biosphere reserve, the lodge enjoys breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The area around the reserve is a biodiversity hotspot, particularly for flora and birds.

The lodge is a welcoming space amid the lush forest and features contemporary design and decor which mixes warm earth tones and clean lines. It's also intimate, accommodating a maximum of 47 guests in 21 spacious rooms and three suites. Connecting rooms are available and there is also one single room. Rooms and suites feature floor to ceiling windows for optimal views of the surrounding forest.

The ample public areas within the lodge, including lounges, a two storey dining room, massage room and Jacuzzi, are all perfect for contemplation and relaxation. The huge windows make you feel part of the surroundings, where at night, the only lights are from fireflies.

Although it is extremely comfortable, Mashpi is located in the cloudforest, so you do need to be prepared for rain. The lodge will supply rubber boots, ponchos, binoculars for rent, and a complimentary bag including a water bottle and insect repellent. The lodge recommends that you pack insoles and thick long socks to make walking in the rubber boots more comfortable.

From its beginning, the lodge has sought to work hand-in-hand with those living in the areas surrounding the reserve. This has been achieved through the provision of jobs, professional training and English classes, and all employees are stakeholders in the business. Scientific research has always been part of the vision for the creation of the Mashpi reserve and later the lodge. Mashpi has alliances with dozens of universities in Ecuador and around the world, receiving students to conduct research and help the lodge better understand better the under-studied forest. The knowledge produced by researchers enriches the guiding experience of guests, as well as reinforcing the need for conservation in this valuable region.
